CELEBRATING 60 YEARS – FACES OF CPNJ #9 Joe has grown so much since starting at Horizon School in 2006. At first, Joe was very shy and was reluctant to join in group activities. Since that time he has worked hard on his speech and become much more confident. Joe loves to be a part of any group activity, and is always starting conversations with his fellow classmates!

Volunteers Needed!

Volunteers are needed to help spread the joy and beauty of art to adults who have disabilities! “Brush With Greatness” is a wonderful art program that is held once each month at each of CPNJ’s adult day centers (Irvington, Wayne and Orange). We introduce a famous piece of art, talk about the artist and help the consumers complete their own masterpieces based on that artist.
Volunteers can help in various ways including explaining directions, passing out supplies, providing hand-over-hand assistance, and planning lessons. Every choice however is made by the consumers themselves: the colors used, the shapes, the angles, etc.

Horizon School’s “Hooray for Hollywood”

On Thursday and Friday, 5/9 and 5/10, the Horizon School Players presented their Spring Musicale entitled “Hooray for Hollywood”. Under the direction of music teacher Jane Aulenbach, students from Ms. Rebecca, Ms . Suriya, Ms Marie, and Ms. Inder’s classes performed selections from “Beauty and the Beast”, “9 to 5”, “Saturday Night Fever, and “Fame”. The music, costumes, and choreography were all fantastic! Thanks to all the parents who attended the performance.

Irvington Adult Training Center’s “Giving Back to our Mothers”

Our Irvington Adult Training Center celebrated Mothers Day with a fantastic celebration. Mothers joined their sons and daughters for an exciting day that included music, dance performances, lunch, and even a fashion show put on by the consumers !

Touching Stories at Horizon School

CPNJ is excited to partner with Touching Stories, a nonprofit that brings unique, multi-sensory stories to children with developmental disabilities. The stories use “pages” that , unlike normal pages from a book, include sensory stimulation – the smell of a campfire, the feel of a warm blanket, and the sound of a bee hive. Touching Stories President, Gwen Bonilla, came to Horizon School to tell one of these stories to our children, as well as instruct volunteers how to run this program themselves.

Celebrating 60 Years – Ryan Ahlberg

CELEBRATING 60 YEARS – FACES of CPNJ #8 – Ryan is a dedicated student, and an ambitious young man. Since arriving at CPNJ, Ryan has started vocational training at a local CVS – selling greeting cards to members of the community. His charisma and positive attitude make him a terrific salesman! He is also been a star in the school play each year, working very hard to master his part.

Way to go Ryan!!

REACH Programs’s Zumbathon a Huge Success

Last week CPNJ’s REACH program raised over $300.00 through a fun and active Zumbathon at Kingley Health in Piscataway, NJ. All money raised will go directly to the REACH program to buy new equipment and implement new services.
